What hormone tests should I get?

Deciding which hormone tests are right for you can be difficult and overwhelming. The good news is that there are a number of hormonal tests available to help you accurately assess your individual needs, from simple at-home tests to comprehensive lab testing.

At-Home Hormone Tests:

  • At-home saliva, urine, and/or bloodspot hormone testing kits provide a convenient method of measuring the concentration of hormones in your body without requiring a doctor's visit or prescription.
  • These kits are easy to use and offer quick results, allowing you to make informed decisions about hormone replacement therapy or other treatments quickly and easily.
  • However, these tests do not measure total hormone level in the bloodstream; they only measure what is present on the surface of your cells. As such, they cannot always provide accurate information about how much of a particular hormone is actually being used by your body.

Medical Lab Tests:

  • Medical lab tests offer more comprehensive information than at-home quantitative home test kits, as they measure both the amount of hormone present in the bloodstream (total serum levels) as well as their breakdown products (e.g., free testosterone).
  • A physician typically orders these tests after taking into account your symptoms and medical history; based on those details, he or she will determine which hormones to test for and what concentrations would be considered normal for each one.
  • Commonly tested hormones include testosterone, estrogen, thyroid hormones (TSH, T4), cortisol, DHEA sulfate, progesterone, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), parathyroid hormone (PTH), adrenocorticotropict hormone (ACTH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and sex steroid binding globulin (SBG).

The Right Hormone Test for You:

  • Choosing the right hormonal test(s) depends largely on signs and symptoms such as fatigue/low energy levels; changes in mood/weight gain; hair loss/thinning; difficulty sleeping; decreased libido; memory issues; joint pain/stiffness; skin problems such as acne or thinning skin; digestive issues including bloating after meals or constipation etc.

For example, if you’re experiencing low energy levels with no other noticeable symptoms then blood spot testing could be sufficient since it measures several types of hormones including testosterone and estrogen that may be causing this symptom. Alternatively if you’re exhibiting severe hot flashes/night sweats in addition to sleep disruption then lab serum testing is recommended since it measures many reproductive hormones simultaneously helping identify possible imbalances that could be causing these symptoms .
