It's a question that has been asked for centuries: does menopause ever end? The answer is yes, but it may not be quite as straightforward as you would like.
To begin, let’s go over what menopause is and how it works. Menopause occurs when a woman’s ovaries stop producing estrogen and progesterone hormones. This marks the end of her reproductive years and typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. The time leading up to menopause is called perimenopause. During this time, a woman’s hormone levels can fluctuate significantly, which can cause symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, depression and anxiety.
So while it is true that menopause marks the end of a woman's reproductive years and associated hormones, it doesn't mean that all effects of this milestone have gone away permanently once she reaches it. In some cases, women will continue to experience symptoms months or even years after menopause begins. This is known as post-menopausal syndrome (PMS) and can include hot flashes, insomnia, bone loss and other health complications.
Fortunately there are treatments available to help relieve these symptoms such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT). HRT involves replacing the body's natural hormones with artificial ones either through pills or injections to restore balance in the body. It can be extremely helpful for easing PMS symptoms and reducing risk for future health issues stemming from menopause such as heart disease or osteoporosis.
